About the Summit

About

Background

Nepal, with an area of 147,181 sq km, borders China and India. The country has recently adopted a new constitution that embraces the policy of private sector-led liberal economics, a competitive multiparty democracy, and a federal structure. The constitution is also committed to the promotion of foreign investment and this should provide a unique opportunity for foreign direct investment in Nepal, particularly in infrastructure development, agriculture, manufacturing and services.

Nepal’s economic growth rate has remained at 3.8%, on average for the past ten years, well below the South Asian average. The country’s economic problems were further exacerbated by the massive earthquake and the blockade in 2015. Nepal is classified as a Least Developed Country (LDC) by the United Nations; however, the country has its goal to advance from its LDC status by 2022 and to transition to a middle income country by 2030. The Ease of Doing Business Ranking has placed Nepal in second place among all South Asian countries, after Bhutan. Taking these positive features, as well as the nation’s investment potential into account, the interest in FDI in Nepal is increasing.

The country has an abundance of young and energetic educated population. Sixty one percent of the total population is between the age of 15 and 65. In addition, since large-scale foreign investments have only started Nepal, less competition and minimal threat from the new players. Recent positive political developments, in addition to the numerous aforementioned agreements that Nepal signed, can only mean that Nepal is extremely keen on attracting investment. In order to promote Nepal as the investment destination for the next decade, GoN will organize Investment Promotion Summit in March 2-3, 2017
